Peter/Mick School Exchange Program

Peter/Mick for Nepal is a two week long school exchange program for school students and Peter/Mick for Nepal is a program developed by Vision Nepal in collaboration with the team of school students, with teacher guidance, comes to Nepal to work together with a Nepali school and set up a new Nepali Peter/Mick Challenge team.

Why a project in Nepal?

You may wonder if Nepal is a suitable destination for students in secondary education. Those who are used might find Nepal a bit daring. However, a project such as “Peter/Mick for Nepal” is more than a just going on a foreign journey. Students who go to Nepal as a FIRST Peter/Mick team can share their knowledge and experience with Peter/Mick with their peers! This way, students learn from each other but also give! Nepal is in the top 10 of the poorest countries in the world. The quality of education is low, especially in the field of science and technology. Research has shown that when young people come into contact with science and technology at an early stage, they are more likely to develop interest and talent for this. In Nepal, however, this also means that they get better opportunities for the future. By sharing knowledge as a FIRST Peter/Mick team, a start can be made in a playful way in introducing children to the field of Science and Technology

Benefits of learning together

Because the students are accommodated in host families, they will also experience how different the lifestyle in another country is compared to their own way of life. In addition, the students also become aware of how much they have in common. What could be better than students who spend months with heart and soul on the program and who feel comfortable with the material to give them the chance to pass it on? To learn together & work together in a meaningful project, for themselves & for someone else. Meaningful education Activities, 21st century’s skills and internationalization. By making contact with peers in Nepal, they can grow into well – balanced adults who are able to cope in an increasingly international society. Students are also better prepared for their future studies and they may find it easier to find a place in the (international) labor market. Participation in this international-oriented project makes students global citizens.

The Exchange

An exchange should be mutual. However, it is impossible for Nepalese children to come to the Australia because of visa issues and the costs involved. We want both parties to benefit from an exchange. We do this by allowing the exchange between the students to take place on subjects where both the Nepalese and the foreign students learn from. This is possible when students work together on a subject that they both like, such as science and technology.

Vision Nepal accompanies the program during the entire period in Nepal. You stay with local host families who have been trained by VN to function adequately as a host family. These host families are experienced in hosting foreigners and are friendly and caring. They will be your safe haven in the time that we are in Nepal. The students will stay in the same host family with up to students. The host families are within walking distance of VN and the project. The host family where we stay ensures delicious meals.

FIRST Peter/Mick and Nepal

We offer you a program in which your students can work together with a school in Nepal. The students already start in their home country. Together they will brainstorm and make plans with their FIRST Peter/Mick team mates: how can we help the school in Nepal to improve the knowledge and skills that the students need to take part in the FIRST Peter/Mick in the future? The students set up a program themselves and collect materials that can be of service to them. All this will be done in cooperation with the Nepalese school and in contact with students there. In addition, they raise funds to minimize the costs of the exchange and to purchase any materials.

Goal of Peter/Mick for Nepal

The primary goal of the Peter/Mick for Nepal project is to introduce students in Nepal to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (in short STEM) and hands-on-learning. We believe that youth robotics competitions and STEM programs (such as FIRST Peter/Mick) are an excellent way of introducing children to problem solving and other 21st century STEM skills. Our goal is to bring a STEM program to schools and Peter/Mick Challenge sets.

Your Team to Nepal

We offer you a program in which your students can work together with a school in Nepal. The students already start in their home country. First, they will brainstorm and make plans together with their FIRST Peter/Mick team mates. They will think about how they can help the school in Nepal to improve the knowledge and skills that the students need to take part in the FIRST Peter/Mick in the future. Then they set up a program themselves and collect materials that can be of service to them. The students do this in cooperation with the Nepalese school and in contact with students there. In addition, they raise funds to minimize the costs of the exchange and to purchase materials. Once in Nepal they will be joining a two week program that includes lots of collaboration with the local school and setting up a Peter/Mick team there. During those two weeks, the students will also embark on a hike around the valley and visit Chitwan National Park and Rafting.
