Ramechhap District:

It is a part of Janakpur Zone & it is one of the 75 districts of Nepal, a landlocked country of South Asia. The district, known as Kirattechhap, with Manthali as its district headquarters, covers an area of sq.km. 1,546 and has a population (2011) of 202,646 and a density of 137.4 per km2. The district has the highest population of endangered native group Kusunda and has the lowest population growth rate in Nepal.

The district was named after Ramechhap village:

The word Ramechhap comes from two Nepali words, Ram (person’s name) and Chhap (mark). According to folklore, the village of Ramechhap was once occupied by Tamang people. A Tamang of the village, Ram by name received mukhtiyari of the village by royal decree. So, the land ownership and other legal activities were performed in the village by the stamp (chhap) of Ram. Hence, the village was called Ramechhap. It is located at the latitude of 27.35553556N & longitude of 86.1344697E. Main Language of this region is Nepali, Tamang, etc. Airport is located at Manthali & there are 45 VDCs. There are 2 municipalities. It is 185 km far from the Kathmandu.

Those villages are mainly occupied by the socially marginalized and economically deprived communities:

Considerable numbers of people are illiterate. Almost 90% of the people are involved in Agriculture but they cannot earn enough for their livelihood. Women have miserable condition. They lack skills to earn money and they cannot enjoy their full rights. Though, people are involved in Agriculture they lack technical knowledge.

Ramechhap is one of the backward districts of Nepal:

It has limited developmental activities and facilities. Unlike Kathmandu, Ramechhap has numbers of illiterate people. Ramechhap lacks proper education facility. Due to Lack of education facilities, young people move from Ramechhap to cities like Kathmandu or fly abroad to secure proper education. There are schools but they don’t have standard education due to which they face comparative disadvantage in their academic and professional career. The existing education standard of Ramechhap is not good and compatible.

Similarly, the health and medical care in Ramechhap is also weak. There is one sub-health post in every VDC of Ramechhap but only one hospital in Ramechhap district. Therefore, the people in Ramechhap take the sick patient to witch doctors or Baidhya Doctors. So it seems like the people of Ramechhap are aware of health issues, medicines and hospitals but they don’t have access to proper hospitals/ health post.

The main source of income in this district is agriculture:

Agriculture is one of the main occupations of local people. The main crops produced in this area are: rice, wheat, Corn, Millet. The people use only the traditional methods of farming. More than 50% families do not have sufficient food for a year from their production. Very few families produce vegetables which they use only for them not for the commercial purpose.

It is one of the beautiful places of Nepal if Ramechhap is viewed with sacred vision:

It has numerous sights which are fascinating. Ramechhap is also important religiously. Vision Nepal has started to work at Ramechhap recently.
